Jove

Jove, also known as Jupiter, was the supreme deity of the Roman pantheon. He was the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Zeus.

In Roman mythology, Jupiter (Jove) was the ruler of the gods, and the God of Thunder. Jupiter was the son of the elder god Saturn, whom he had overthrown. Jupiter was the father of Mars, the god of war, who in turn was supposedly the father of Romulus and Remus the legendary founders of Rome. As such the Romans claimed descent not only from the gods, but from the supreme deity himself.

Jupiter was an important god to the Romans. They built templs to him in each of their cities, and the largest pagan temple in the entire empire was dedicated to Jupiter. The temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitoline Hill in Rome was the center of worship of Jupiter, as well as the other important deities Juno and Minerva.

On the Capitoline Hill in Rome there was a large stone called the Iuppiter Lapis, meaning the Jupiter Stone, which was used to swear oaths. Oaths made upon this oath stone were considered sacred and inviolable.

In keeping with this god's importance, the planet Jupiter, the larget in our solar system, is named after the main god of the Romans.
