The city of Carthage, near modern day Tunis was founded by Phoenician colonists and became a major power of the Mediterranean until her destruction by Rome in the Third Punic War in 146 BC. Rome later refounded Carthage, and it became one of the three most important cities of the Empire. Carthage was destroyed a second time in 698 during the Moslem conquest.
