The Kingdom of Armenia was founded around 600 B.C. and reached its height between 95 - 66 B.C. under Tigranes the Great, becoming one of the most powerful kingdoms of its time within the region. Armenia was caught between the spheres of influence and territorial ambitions of the Roman Empire and the Persians. It was at times a client state of Rome.
